As a newborn photographer, I’ve learned that the timing and order of events during a session can really affect how it goes and the final photos. One strategy I always use is starting with family and sibling portraits. In this blog post, I’ll explain why I begin sessions with these shots and how it benefits both the family and the outcome of the photoshoot. Addressing the Needs of Little Siblings: Newborn sessions typically last between 3 to 4 hours, a timeframe that can be challenging for little siblings, especially toddlers. By starting with family and sibling portraits, we address the reality that young children have limited attention spans and energy reserves. Beginning with these portraits ensures that siblings are fresh and engaged, increasing the likelihood of cooperation and genuine interactions captured in the photographs. Accommodating Mom's Preparation: Before coming to the studio, moms often spend time preparing themselves, including doing their makeup and styling their hair. As a photographer, I want moms to feel confident and comfortable during the session, and part of that confidence comes from feeling good about their appearance. By starting with family portraits, we allow moms the opportunity to complete their preparation beforehand, ensuring that their makeup and hair are fresh and camera-ready for the photoshoot. Maximizing Efficiency: Prioritizing family and sibling portraits at the beginning of the session maximizes efficiency and time management. By addressing the needs of little siblings and accommodating mom's preparation before the session, we ensure that we make the most of the time available. This approach allows us to capture beautiful family portraits while everyone is fresh and attentive, before transitioning seamlessly into individual newborn poses. Starting newborn sessions with family and sibling portraits helps both the family and the photographer. By focusing on siblings first, allowing time for mom to get ready, and creating a calm atmosphere, we set up a successful and pleasant photoshoot. This approach helps capture genuine and special moments, from the joy of a new family member to the love and connection that make the family unique.
